U.S.-China Joint Forum on Nursing To the People’s Republic of China

“Healthy People, Healthy Communities, Through Nursing Contributions”

A delegation of professionals specializing in nursing has been selected to participate in bilateral exchanges with their professional counterparts in China, under the auspices of People to People Ambassador Programs.


CHINA

Age-old traditions converge with modern Chinese life in an exotic setting that begs to be discovered anew by all who enter. From bustling cities to rural villages to the top of the Great Wall, you will discover a warm and joyful society, where family and honor play a meaningful role. This heady mix of ancient culture and contemporary practices make visiting China one of the most intoxicating adventures you’ll find anywhere.
 

Proposed Itinerary

Topics of discussion for the professional meetings are provided by the delegation leader and will be modified to accommodate the specific interests of delegates as the delegation grows.

A detailed itinerary will be provided approximately 30 days prior to the delegation’s departure.

The professional counterparts you meet throughout the program will be invited to join the delegation during a lunch or dinner to further allow interaction between delegates and their hosts.

Sunday-Monday, May 18-19, 2008, Day 1-2: USA to Beijing (departures start Sunday and continue on Monday depending on which carrier you choose

Tuesday, May 20, Day 3: Beijing
Beijing is not only the political and administrative center of the People’s Republic of China, but also China’s single greatest repository of monuments and treasures from the Imperial era. It is the second largest and fastest growing municipality in modern China, the home and workplace to 12 million people.

All flights will arrive on Sunday. Packet pickup and welcome dinner will be provided at the hotel.

Wednesday, May 21, Day 4: Beijing

Program briefing: Discuss the political and cultural diversity of China and receive further information on the delegation.

Professional Program: Opening Ceremony with keynote speaker(s)

Evening: Social event

Guest program:
Old Beijing’s culture and customs will come to life as you spend time with a family in the old Hutong area. Gain an understanding of how the locals really live by immersing yourself in their lives, even if only for a short time.

The still water of reflecting pools and exotic foliage stirring in the breeze will entice you to explore the largest and best-preserved royal garden in China. The Summer Palace has been an urban oasis for the last 800 years and was restored to its original splendor in the early 20th century.

Thursday, May 22, Day 5: Beijing – Breakout Sessions
We plan to have four tracts running concurrently with a focus on leadership, education, research and practice; delegates may choose two tracts of most interest and relevance to them for the morning and afternoon sessions.

4:00-5:00 Closing - Developing Nursing Collaborations
A panel discussion will be held with two U.S. and two Chinese leaders or delegates. Ten minutes for each panelist, with Q&A and discussions, is being planned.

Guest program:
Experience Yong He Gong, also known as the Lama Temple, this morning. This temple is Beijing’s most active Buddhist temple. Built in 1694 as a palace of a prince, Yong He Gong became a Buddhist temple in 1723, and was given over to Lamaist practitioners in 1744. It houses a spectacular 59-foot statue of Maitreya Buddha carved from a single sandalwood tree. The afternoon is free to explore or rest.

Friday, May 23, Day 6: Beijing
Today delegates will have the opportunity for site visits in both the morning and afternoon. This will provide the opportunity to observe Chinese professionals in their own element and setting.

  • Hospice Facility
  • Home Care Agency

6:00                          Group dinner and closing banquet with Chinese colleagues

Guest program:
Step into the same compound where Ming-dynasty emperors came to pray for a good harvest. The Temple of Heaven, built in 1420, is one of the largest parks in the city.

The China National Museum of Fine Arts has always been at the center of Chinese modern and contemporary art. Its collection of 60,000 pieces includes masterpieces featuring important artists and the essence of folk art. As the biggest state-level art gallery, it houses important exhibitions and events and is a must-see while you are in Beijing.

Saturday, May 24, Day 7: Beijing
In the morning, delegates and guests will visit the Forbidden City (Imperial Palace), whose massive stone walls were once the residence of Ming and Qing emperors.

Afternoon free to explore independently or you may opt to take part in a visit to the silk market or Summer Palace.

Sunday, May 25, Day 8: Beijing
This morning, delegates and guests visit the Great Wall of China, from whose high vantage points visitors enjoy breathtaking views of the sections that meander through the mountainous landscape.

For those interested, an optional foot massage will be provided before dinner. Or, enjoy this time to relax.

A farewell banquet on the final evening in China will give delegates and guests a chance to recap their People to People experience.

Monday, May 26, Day 9: Beijing to USA
