OPTIONAL EXTENSION — POST PROGRAM TRAVEL

Kruger National Park, South Africa – 2008

The park was founded in 1898 by a group of dedicated individuals who believed in preserving the northeastern part of South Africa as a national park for future generations to enjoy. Today Kruger National Park encompasses nearly 12,000 square miles of wildlife safari country and supports more than 800 species of animals in their natural habitats.

Day One – Introduction to Kruger National Park

From Johannesburg you will journey to Kruger National Park, where you will be met and travel overland to one of the world’s preeminent wildlife sanctuaries. Plan on a late afternoon arrival at your lodge for check-in, with time to relax before dinner.

Day Two – Wildlife Safari

Early morning affords the ideal time to see most of the animals, as they feed before the heat of the day. Enjoy the exotic plant and animal life under the beautiful dawn light.

Close attention at the rivers reveals lazy hippos and steel-jawed crocodiles. Your guide will help you spot some or all of the big five: lion, Cape buffalo, rhinoceros, leopard, and elephant. You’ll need no help in locating the ever-present giraffe, zebra, kudu, impala, and warthog.

Day Three – Wildlife Safari

Another early morning ensures prime viewing of the park’s exotic species and beautiful landscape. You’re sure to notice an abundance of colorful bird life throughout the park.

Your guide will assist you again in finding some or all of the big five and other rare and extraordinary animals, including a cross-section of birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.

Visitors can observe animals ranging from the powerful and agile cheetah to the great baboon. You may witness the rugged wildebeest, the cagey hyena, and many types of antelope. Look closely at how the animals blend into their surroundings.

Day Four – Return Home

The flight to New York departs this evening from Johannesburg, with arrival scheduled for early the following morning at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
