U.S.-China Education Forum To the People’s Republic of China

Program Dates: November 29 - December 7, 2008

A delegation of professionals specializing in education has been selected to participate in bilateral exchanges with their professional counterparts in China, under the auspices of People to People Ambassador Programs.


CHINA

China is one of the most intoxicating places in the world today. Age-old traditions converge with modern Chinese life in a setting you are sure to find exotic. From bustling cities to rural villages to the top of the Great Wall, you will discover a warm and joyful society, where family and honor play a meaningful role.
 


Proposed Itinerary


Topics of discussion for the professional meetings are provided by the delegation leader and will be modified to accommodate the specific interests of delegates as the delegation grows.

A detailed itinerary will be provided approximately 30 days prior to the delegation’s departure.

The professional counterparts you meet throughout the program will be invited to join the delegation during a lunch or dinner to further allow interaction between delegates and their hosts.
 

Saturday-Sunday, November 29-30, 2008, Day 1-2: USA to Beijing
(departures start Saturday and/or Sunday depending on which carrier you choose)

Monday, December 1, Day 3: Beijing
Beijing is not only the political and administrative center of the People’s Republic of China, but also China’s single greatest repository of monuments and treasures from the Imperial era. It is the second largest and fastest growing municipality in modern China, the home and workplace to 12 million people.

All flights will arrive on Monday. Packet pickup and welcome dinner will be provided at the hotel.

Tuesday, December 2, Day 4: Beijing
Program briefing: Discuss the political and cultural diversity of China and receive further information on the delegation.

Later this morning, delegates and guests visit the Great Wall of China, from whose high vantage points visitors enjoy breathtaking views of the sections that meander through the mountainous landscape.

A guest speaker will join the delegation this evening.

Wednesday, December 3, Day 5: Fly to Guiyang
Fly to Guiyang today and transit to the group hotel(s) for your stay in the area.

Arrive in Guiyang today. Established as a capital during the Ming dynasty, Guiyang has long been a remote backwater of China’s southwest. Its relative isolation has made the region one of the best-kept secrets in China. Limestone covered hills, jagged peaks and terraced rice fields characterize its stunning landscape. The capital of Guizhou province, Guiyang is home to colorful ethnic minority cultures and unique traditions.

Visit to People’s Square this afternoon to familiarize the delegation with the local area and feel for the city.

Thursday, December 4, Day 6: Guiyang

Professional Program: Opening Ceremony with keynote speaker(s)
Begin your professional exchange and education sessions this midday with representatives from the Chinese education system.

Specific focus areas of education planned to be included in the Education Forum:

  • Secondary School Principals
  • Curriculum & Instruction
  • Technology Education
  • Professional Teaching Standards

Afternoon discussion sessions focus on:

  • Integration of technology in all facets of education
  • Accreditation: international, national, and professional
  • Quality improvements and competitiveness in outcomes
  • The role of the schools in preparing students for citizenship

Take part in a welcome dinner and evening performance “Colorful Guizhou”.

Guest program:
This morning the delegation will hear from Professor Zhabng Xiaosong, an anthropologist, or one of her colleagues about the local ethnic population and groups. Later enjoy a cooking lesson featuring the local spicy foods.

Friday, December 5, Day 7: Guiyang
Morning school visits in Guiyang joined by teachers from more remote areas of Guizhou will take place this morning. Enjoy some time in the local schools seeing classrooms, meeting the teachers and other staff.

Professional program focusing on:

  • Role of technology in education in China with respect to academic achievement in core curriculum areas in 21st century skills preparation
  • Examine how technology professional development is supported and delivered in China

Delegates and guests will explore Quingyan Ancient Town, one of the most famous historical and cultural towns in Guizhou Province this afternoon.

Guest program:
Pay a visit to this morning to the beautiful Ming-era Jiaxiu Pavilion. Rising nearly 100 feet on the Fuyu (Floating Jade) Bridge over Nanming River, the Jiaxiu Tower houses the authentic works and paintings of many ancient calligraphers. Spend the afternoon exploring the Quinyan Ancient Town with the rest of the delegation this afternoon.

Saturday, December 6, Day 8: Guiyang
Delegates and guests today will drive to Anshun City, where the People to People School (largely built from donations from delegates who have traveled to Guiyang over the last several years) is located; afternoon visit to the school and gathering with the local children and villagers.

Continue on to venture through the garden province of Guizhou and see the beautiful countryside en route to the remarkable caves of the Dragon Palace. The palace’s underground karst cave is nine miles long and threads through 20 mountains, linking more than 90 caves.

A farewell banquet on the final evening in China will give delegates and guests a chance to recap their People to People experience.

Sunday, December 7, Day 9: Guiyang to USA (via Guangzhou and Hong Kong)
